MIPA 2023

This was my first year in the summer workshop, and it was truly transformative for me. I grew closer to Portrait staffers I hadn’t known very well, which helped build my confidence as a leader.

Before this, I had never heard of Bobby Hawthorne, but after taking his workshop, I can confidently say he is one of the best storytellers I know. He helped me develop a voice in my writing and showed me that journalistic writing doesn’t have to be dull or scripted.

At the end of the week, I won an award at the talent show for my kazoo performance—along with plenty of baddie bucks!

MIPA 2024

My first year as Editor-in-Chief wasn’t easy, but I returned to Portrait this year with much more confidence thanks to the skills I learned in the “Level Up Leadership” class. I also created a resource for new writers to refer to, which helped us stay organized throughout the year.

At the end of the week, I won an award for my positive attitude and leadership skills—and performed another kazoo act, this time featuring my adviser, Cody Harrell. I loved MIPA even more this year, and I’m strongly considering returning as an Upstart.
